Night of Dread

On Saturday, Oct. 29, I went to the Night of Dread put on by Clay and Paper Theatre. This is a wonderful yearly event that is held in and around Dufferin Grove Park.

Algonquin Park

I was in Algonquin Park early in October, hiking in the fall forests. A beautiful time--cool days, rain just past, golden maples, pines, hemlocks, rocks, lakes, the smell of the earth.

Felt Wallhangings

Felt Wall Hangings by Lily S. May

I've been having some fun making small felt wall hangings which I'm putting on my etsy shop as I complete them.  The photo here is of two pieces I've recently completed.  So far, I'm using synthetic felt, but have found a great supplier of merino wool felt sheets on etsy whom I've placed an order with.  A few years ago I made felt using the wet felting method and loved working with merino wool.  That process was extremely hard on my hands, so buying ready made sheets will give me a way to work with the wool and save my hands at the same time.

Catch up!

It's been a great summer.  Time to show you a few more photos from my wanderings.

First there's the narrator of The Pedaler's Wager, put on by Clay and Paper Theatre in Dufferin Grove Park in July and August.  It was great seeing the performance after helping paper mache some of the puppets earlier in the summer.

Next is Baron Boots, one of the giant papier mache puppets.  He's resting either before or after his arduous performance!

In August, I traveled to Saskatchewan.  Here's some photos of soulful Grasslands National Park.

Antidote to Extreme Heat

On this extremely hot day in Toronto--38 degrees C--I'm going to Lake Ontario in Prince Edward County in my mind.

Mirrors of the Heart Companion Book

Wholeness Card from Mirrors of the Heart Deck by Lily S. May

I've been writing a book to go with the Mirrors of the Heart Deck that I made in 1994. It's quite a process of spending time with each card and seeing what comes to me. I'm seeing the deck with new eyes and feeling.  I hope to have the book out by the Fall.

Clay and Paper Theatre

I've been doing some volunteer work with Clay and Paper Theatre.  Yesterday was a warm, sunny day.  It was perfect for a day long workshop in Dufferin Grove Park, where people came by to work on the puppets and props for an upcoming new production.  I dropped in during the afternoon for around 2 1/2 hours and helped paper mache a giant boot, listened to great conversations and enjoyed being among some terrific people.

Pages 7 & 8 from A Short History of Latent Kittens

Pages 7 & 8 from A Short History of Latent Kittens by Lily S. May

Here's pages 7 & 8 from the fiction book project that I recently sent in to Art House Coop.  These pages began with a mistake that  I decided to radically correct by cutting one of the pages.  It's turned out that this has become my favourite part of the whole book.  Again, I used a combination of markers and collage with Japanese papers.  Throughout the book, the pages wrinkled wildly, but I figured that was part of the experiment--a loss of control.

A Short History of Latent Kittens--Fiction Project

Pages 15 & 16 from Short History of Latent Kittens by Lily S. May

Well, I've finally finished my Art House Co-op Fiction Project.  Here's the cover plus pages 15 and 16. I chose the topic Help! and created a sketchbook from chapter 7 of a serial story I'm writing called The Care of Latent Kittens.  This writing has grown out of my concern for the state of the earth and is about a fictional endangered species and the efforts in the near future to save them and humanity from extinction.

I used Japanese papers for the collages, and Pitt Markers for the writing and drawing.

Stephen Harper with an Ornamental Gourd on His Head

Since we're having an election soon, here's a portrait I painted a few years ago of Stephen Harper with an ornamental gourd on his head.  I did this as an antidote to the dire tone of his government.
